Dortmund es una ciudad de Renania del Norte-Westfalia, es la séptima más grande de Alemania está situada en la región del Ruhr. Tiene 587.272 habitantes (31.8.2004). Área: 280,3 km². Limita: al N,E y SE con Unna (distrito) (al N con el pueblo de Lünen, al E con los pueblos de Kamen y Unna ,al SE con la municipalidad de Holzwickede y el pueblo de Schwerte ), al S con la ciudad libre de Hamm , al SO con el distrito de Ennepe-Ruhr ,al O con la ciudad libre de Bochum ,y al NO con el distrito de Recklinghausen(pueblos de Herten, Recklinghausen y Castrop-Rauxel).

Ciudad (pob., 2002 est.: 589.200 hab.), en Renania del Norte–Westfalia, en el oeste de Alemania.

Se mencionó por primera vez en 885 AD y se convirtió en ciudad imperial libre en 1220; posteriormente se incorporó a la Liga hanseática. Después de haber sido un próspero centro mercantil en el s. XIV, cayó en decadencia luego de la guerra de los Treinta Años y perdió sus derechos imperiales en 1803. El desarrollo de la explotación del carbón y del mineral de hierro, así como el término de la construcción del canal Dortmund-Ems en 1899, estimularon su recuperación. La ciudad fue prácticamente destruida en la segunda guerra mundial, pero se reconstruyó en casi toda su extensión. Constituye un importante eje industrial y de transporte de la zona del Ruhr.
